Paul, whose Roman name means 'small or humble' in Latin, is an iconic character in the New Testament and because of God's work through him, the gospel was zealously spread to Gentiles like us. We learned a lot about God's awesomeness through Mr. Small's missional journey in our studies of Acts and had the opportunity to reenact parts of it @ Jerrold's Treehouse friday night...

Our fearless Captain, Mark, braved the torrent waters of Puget Sound with 6 passengers aboard The Deception. The unpredictable wind was unyielding at times, tossing our boat left and right-- nearly capsizing it. But with great skill, Mark harnessed its powerful energy to bring us to Blake Island in record breaking time! Budding skippers Seb, Betty & Pui Yee did a fantastic job standing in for Jojo. What an incredible way to experience the forces of nature and God!

We have been blessed with some great summer weather so far. BBQ, Seafair, hiking, swimming, boating, jogging, shopping, yardworking (???!!) ...all for our enjoyment this summer.

All good things don't last ...well, except for God's love for us (of couse!) which is everlasting..!

Study of Acts 15 to 18

Yes, it's kind of a longer study this time. Fear not !! We are getting close to finishing the book of Acts !!

In this study, we see how God continues to lead the disciples to go on missionary journeys. Along the way, disciples are showing that they are human being as well. They become frustrated, get into disagreement with each other and become annoyed by ungodly spirit behaviors. However, the disciples are being reminded by God that God is with them -- do not be afraid to speak and do not be silent. For Christians too, often times we don't speak or share the good news of Gospel to the people around us. What are we afraid of? What are we concerned of? Isn't God backing us all the way?

Thanks to fellow Arkers - we were able to join the Boeing family day and tour the plant, seeing exactly how they put all the pieces together to making commercial airplanes. Everything looks easy on paper - all you need to do is ordering parts from all over the world and put them all together in Seattle ...right ???!!!

Yes, so much to cover with so little time! It was a relaxing and fun time spent together in the beautiful Sequim valley over the retreat weekend. The weather was a bit moody but we were able to mix a bit of outdoor + indoor activities.

For those who missed the retreat this year - No Fear! - we will be planning our next retreat soon! In the mean time, have a great summer and we will see you at the next fellowship get-together!

Yes, Spring Festival, 春節, Chinese New Year, it's the Lunar calendar celebration of the New Year !! What does this mean? Well, how about a traditional Chinese Hot Pot Fest ??

You asked for it, and now you've got it !!

This coming Friday night, we will have the ArkCNYFest2011 get-together at Hodge's Casa

恭賀新禧 ! For those who have spent Chinese New Year in Asia, you know what a big deal this is. Imagine colors of red and gold, aroma of food, joy of reunion, playing with firecrackers, giving and receiving red pockets, and the excitement of a week of no school/work... the old has gone and the new has come!

Important Details: Please come with hotpot meat / balls of your choice, or a Chinese new year dish / dessert. (the Host will provide veggie, noodles, rice, soup base, dipping sauces). If you have questions about what to bring or where to buy them, drop me a line, we will work something out.

You are welcome to come early and help set up, dinner will start at 6:30pm. (Hodge casa: 6)

Yes, we hear ya! We all want a Retreat - time to reflect on our relationship with God, why we need or don't need God (??!!) and of course, get to know each other better and have some fun! This is a great year to see quite a few new faces showing up at the Ark. We are all very excited about this upcoming year. From last kick-off meeting, we had a big turnout. Check it out (photo below):

Planning ahead, we do need to book the Retreat place & time early, we already had our first meeting at the Treehouse (Jerrold's) and got a few details down. We are anticipating approx 25 people ...! Yes, it's you, you and you !! To answer your question - No, retreat is not boring. In fact, you will be hooked on the retreat once you've come to one (speaking from personal experience ...!)

We're starting our new year at the Ark next Saturday (1/15). This will be a simple time for fellowship: reflection on the past year, and planning for the year to come. We'll be discussing "big picture" topics such as our goals as a fellowship, as well as more "nitty gritty" topics such as Bible study topics, fellowship schedule, retreats, and so forth. But even better, this will be a great opportunity for all of us to step up and see where we can serve within our church community.

After a 6+ month hiatus, we will be returning to a regular Bible Study Schedule. We will resume meeting twice a month, alternating Fridays and Saturdays. Don't worry about the schedule yet, as more detail will be given at our first meeting, SATURDAY, JULY 17TH, 2010, where we will introduce our study on the book of Psalm. Come at 5:30pm to eat together. BRING YOUR OWN FOOD** (Not to share; this is not a potluck) for you or your family's dinner. If you just want to catch Bible Study, come at 6:30pm.

**Microwave, Stove, Oven and Grill (Grill requires advance notice) available for limited use within the 1 hour allotted time.

Daneil Chapter 4

Do you know how a squirming Caterpillar turn into a beautiful butterfly? First, the caterpillar has to spin silk and form a cocoon Once inside this protective space, amazing changes occur. In the next 12 days, its organ and entire structure are dis-assembled and completely remodeled. This last stage's chemical processes is still not yet completely understood by us. When the butterfly struggles to break out the cocoon, its body is soft and weak. But, it will spend time beating their colorful wings, acclimating themselves and growing stronger.

This Friday, we will study how King Nebachanezzer also got an extreme make over, and learn what transformation lies before each one of us.

Even with the boost of a historic presidential election, the Wall Street and the world economy are still struggling in uncertainty. No one dares to predict when or how the economy will recover, or will it ever? Some of us may start to wonder how long it will take for our 401K or investment to even make up the loss since the crush. Maybe some of our parents who are close to retirement begin to worry if they have enough to retire on. Some families are already having trouble paying their next month's rent
or food. In such a time, deliverance seems out of reach, what can we do? This Friday, we will learn from three courageous men who faced trouble with integrity even when there is no assurance of a way out.

For those of you who have never participated in serving meals at the men's shelter, here's a bit more detail. We'll arrive and maybe watch a short video on what UGM is and what they do (since it is our first time). We'll put our valuables in the office then divide up into 2 groups: Kitchen crew and Serving crew. The kitchen crew will be cleaning dishes and pots, may be floors too. Serving crew will dish out the food cafeteria style. They will provide us with disposable aprons and gloves so no need to bring your own. The kitchen is very clean and pretty efficient. But of course it is a kitchen so wear closed toe shoes (ie no sandals), NO HEELS (floor slippery) and simple, comfortable clothes. You guys know. Common sense stuff. Since we are talking clothes, this is a men's shelter so dress modestly (sorry had to say it; I know we know better). It goes by fast and it's fun to talk with the kitchen crew. Typically we don't do any cooking but of course if they ask for help, I know Arkers (most) are great in the kitchen. Above all, listen to what you are asked to do. We are there to help. Sometimes the food is past the expiration date. They are not stupid; they know. They like to offer you food/snacks as they are quite kind.

This Saturday, 7/18 -

We will meet at Dennis & Joyce's Casa
- Please let me know if you need a ride and want to carpool.
Meeting Time: 8am <-- driving time is approx 30 min. and early start avoids crowds
Destination: Denny Creek Slippery Slab + Franklin Falls!
Direction: Drive along I-90 East toward Issaquah/Snoqualmie, Exit #47 (before Snoqualmie Pass). Turn left at the stop sign, and cross to the north (left) side of the freeway. At the "T," stay right on Road No. 58, and pass Denny Creek Campground at about three miles. A short distance past the campground, turn left onto a .2-mile road (No. 5830). Continue to the end of Road No. 5830 and parking at 2,300 feet.
What to bring:

Sunblock (we will walk mostly in the shades but bring it just in case)
Sunglasses / Hat
Camera
WATER(!) - just put couple bottles in your backpack
Bug spray - in case our bug friends are still around
Shoes (please please I beg you don't wear high heels or sandals)
Towel (we are going to a CREEK so you want to bring a towel after soaking your feet in the creek)
Light lunch (pack a sandwich / power bars / candy / beef jerky / fruit etc so you don't starve)

Trail description: Denny Creek is 2 1/2 miles round trip, elevation gain 500 feet, and Franklin Falls is 2 miles round trip, elevation gain 200 feet.
The trail is fairly flat and suitable for all ages. One way takes about 30 minutes depending on your pace. Everyone should go at his/her own pace and should not be pressured. Our first goal is to reach the slippery slap. But for those who feel that this is not enough workout for the day, we can continue to go UP the trail for another 30 minutes and come back down. Another option is to take the Franklin Falls Trail after the Denny Creek one. These two trails shares the same parking lot so we can hike as much as we feel like to. This can be decided when everyone gets to the CREEK.

Anthony ...goodbye Seattle

On April 25, 2008, we sent Anthony away with music, sharing and slideshows ...to kick start his new life in the Far East ...Hong Kong. It also happened to be his birthday the following day. I guess you can say that "we killed two birds with one stone" ...going-away + birthday !! (just kidding!)

Anthony has been a very dear brother to ECC and the Ark fellowship. His relentless pursuit for perfection (sounds like a car commercial ...) and dedication to serve have set great examples for the fellow brothers and sisters. Yes, we are going to miss him and wish him all the Best because he is still under God's watch ... I mean, care ;-)

Can you smell the flowers blooming? Can you hear the birds singing? Do you see bees and butterflies? Of course ...not! No, you are not dreaming. It's not quite spring yet. The good news is that the Spring is just around the corner !! We are counting down the days now. 3 more weeks we will be heading out to the Ark spring retreat out on Whidbey Island !!

As you may know, ECC is hosting an easter carnival next weekend, March 15th. If you would like to participate, we are having a decoration party the night before to decorate our booth.

As a last minute decision, some of the Arkers will head up the Snoqualmie Summit for snow tubing this Saturday (1/5), more information here:

Dress in layers: T-shrit, sweatshirt, jacket, even a scarf if you are really afraid of cold weather. Yes, I'm chicken, I'm bringing one
Gloves: You don't really need waterproof gloves but it's preferred that you have them ...if you want to play snow fight!
Pants: Of course, you need to wear pants to go tubing ..! Wear a layer of waterproof pants if you can. It's not end of the world if you don't have them. You'll be sitting in a tube so your bottom don't really get wet.
Hat: Yes, the hat will help keep you warm. Wear a cute hat like this one: http://flickr.com/photos/seattle/2150901089/
Water & Light Snack: For 2 hours of tubing fun, you will get thirsty or a little hungry. If you don't, then something is wrong with you
Ski Goggle: It's Goggle, not Google ...You don't need it but it doesn't hurt to bring them
Shoes: Don't wear tennis shoes. Wear something that are waterproof or water repellent You will be stepping and walking in the snow here and there. You do want to keep your feet dry. Your feet will thank you ...oh yeah, wear thick socks. If you don't have any, it's time to get a pair.
What Else ??? Sunglasses to shield out the UV ..and last but not the least ...your CAMERA with battery & memory card !!

All in all, if you're a skier or snowboarder, dress as usual. If you're not a winter sport enthusiast, go with my suggestions above and you'll be fine. Looking forward to seeing all of you ...up there!

What are you afraid of? Height? Rats? Darkness? Rejection? Violence? Horror movies? Getting sick? Losing your job? or any moving thing with more than 4 legs? Fear is often an unwelcome feeling. But, how can King David boldly proclaimed "whom shall I fear?" in Psalm 27:1? What is his key to such courage and bravery?

The Wise Teacher of Proverb reveals a clue about this key: "Fear of the Lord is beginning of wisdom". This Friday, we will study this key that Moses also gave to the Israelites, so that they shall not fear facing the giants in the Promised Land.

With Thanksgiving kicking off the holiday season, the malls are jam packed with shoppers. (Did anyone get to the Black Friday sales?) Buying gifts, ordering eggnog latte, baking cookies, putting up lights, decorating Christmas trees, planning ski trips or family vacations - all of these really hype up our holiday spirit!

The Israelites must have anticipated such festivities when entering the Promised Land - a land with streams and pools of water, with springs flowing in the valleys and hills; a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills. ( Deut.8). What a difference from their 40 years of wandering in the desert or the 400 years of slavery in Egypt!

But, how did they face the riches of the Promised Land? Were they also wrapped up in preparing for festivities like we are now? In the hustling and bustling, did they remember the Giver who saved them? Do we remember why we celebrate Christmas?

This Friday, we will study how Moses prepared the Israelites to face the riches and festivity ahead and worship our Savior who give us freedom and life, the true Star of Christmas!

It's time to remember and give thanks to our Lord for His presence and blessings with us this year. Our dear counselors, Willie & Daphne, are opening their home for the Ark's thanksgiving dinner this Saturday 5-7pm.

Daphne will make her famous "Turkey Wreath" as main course for us!
And let us make this dinner a colorful and fun meal by bringing a dish of our own, such as green salad, orange yams, yellow potato, cranberry juice, blueberry jam, black forest cake, white ice cream, pink gello, or any other color etc...

Hiking Bear says ...

Hehehe, it's that time again ...time to go Hiking !!! We've waited this long to finally go out as a group to the beautiful Pacific Northwest trails!

Heads up - we are doing a shorter hiking trip this Saturday to get everyone warmed up for the bigger hike up on Mt Rainier on 9/3 Monday - you have no excuse not to go because it is Labor Day !! ;-)

This Saturday, 8/25 -

Meet in Bellevue to carpool - we might meet over at Dennis & Joyce's Casa so that the cars don't need to be parked at the Bellevue Park and Ride. Let me know who needs a ride and who needs to carpool. Our car will fit Betty/Seb + 2 people. 4-wheel drive is not required because we are not going to drive on gravel road.
Meeting Time: 8am <-- driving time is approx 30 min. and early start avoids crowds
Destination: Denny Creek & more!
Direction: Drive along I-90 East toward Issaquah/Snoqualmie, Exit #47 (before Snoqualmie Pass). Turn left at the stop sign, and cross to the north (left) side of the freeway. At the "T," stay right on Road No. 58, and pass Denny Creek Campground at about three miles. A short distance past the campground, turn left onto a .2-mile road (No. 5830). Continue to the end of Road No. 5830 and parking at 2,300 feet.
What to bring:

Sunblock (we will walk mostly in the shades but bring it just in case)
Sunglasses / Hat
Camera
WATER(!) - just put couple bottles in your backpack
Bug spray - in case our bug friends are still around
Shoes (please please I beg you don't wear high heels or sandals)
Towel (we are going to a CREEK so you want to bring a towel after soaking your feet in the creek)
Light lunch (pack a sandwich / power bars / candy / beef jerky / fruit etc so you don't starve)

Berry Pie, Berry Pancake, Berry Smoothie ...

Update: Wow, the blueberry farm turned out to be much bigger than we imagined !! We had to work hard to pick the berries of our dream! Couple long lost friends joined the fun - Michael & Amos. In case you did not know, Blueberry is an edible fruit, low in calories and sodium, contain no cholesterol, and is an excellent source of fiber. Enough said, after the blueberry farm workout, we went ahead and made bluberry pie & bluberry shake (yum!) afterwards ...so refreshing! Dennis & Michael made it happen! This shake tastes 100% better than Tully's bluberry shake and 10 times cheaper! Don't try this at home - make sure you consult with Dennis & Michael first! ;-)

After lunch we had a casual yet thought provocative discussion on one of the questions: Why do bad things happen to innocent children. The discussion brings many interesting perspectives to this topic.

Directions: From I-90, take 148th Avenue SE exit (BCC exit, 11B) north. Turn right into parking lot just past SE 8th Street <-- of course, if you somehow manage to get lost, who you gonna call ??? Yes ---------> Joyce! :-P

After the blueberry picking, we will head to the cooking classroom at Dennis/Joyce's Casa (10 min. drive from the farm). Betty the Baker will show us how to make the blueberry pie. Dennis the Digger will show us how to make the blueberry pancake!

Just so you know, after traveling around the country (and the world) for the past years, both the pie & pancake are by far one of the best I have ever tasted. What's the secret ?? Come and find out! You are more than welcome to bring your friends and join the fun!

Memorial Day Weekend Activity!

Ok, for those who can't wait to get out of this rainy weather ...we are going to do a group bike ride this upcoming Memorial Day weekend bike ride! Details are here:

Date: 5/26, Saturday Time: Meet @12:15pm
Location: near University of Washington
Trail: Burke Gilman Trail

We will ride for about 2 hours, taking breaks in between, of course ;-) have lunch and do a roundtrip to end in early afternoon. This activity is open to all beginners & amateurs. Don't be shy - come and join the fun! Get out of your lazy computer chair and work out some sweats!

As of now we have just shy of 10 people confirmed to go. Some people will rent bike at the Montlake Bike Shop near UW and some will bring their own bikes.

If you would like to join this bike riding event, please e-mail: bat.seattle@gmail.com (Betty Sun) to register and let us know if you have a bike or need to rent one.

Remember ...don't take pictures and ride the bike at the same time ...!!!

the.Ark was honored to have Chef Peter in the house to demo the art of making sushi rolls in the beautiful Newcastle on Saturday! Brief Bio on Peter - he is an engineer by day, a car mechanic by night ...and a sushi chef on the weekend! Life is busy or what ..!

Everyone took turn and really got hands-on making different kinds of California rolls & Hand rolls ...a very addictive activity ...what was your favorite sushi roll ?? Mine was the "Ark Roll" made by Justina - with all the right ingredients plus unagi that just came out of the oven ...!
